Question and Answer: Reluctant Writer;Poor Speller

I am desperately trying to find the developmental process (skills necessary) to become a writer and speller. I can't find a good developmental breakdown for those processes anywhere. Can you help? I am a homeschooler. I have a daughter who is 12 and she is still a very reluctant writer and it is NOT the motor portion. In addition, she is NOT a good speller.

If it is not the motor portion, your daughter's poor spelling may explain why she is a reluctant writer.

It should also be noted that learning is a stratified process. Certain skills have to be mastered first, before it becomes possible to master subsequent skills. In order to be a basketball player, a person first has to master the subskills, e.g. passing, dribbling, defense, and shooting. In the same way, in order learn to spell, a child first has to learn the subskills of spelling.

The skill of spelling embraces many subskills. Subskills of particular importance are (1.) the ability to analyze, i.e to perceive the whole in its individual parts, (2.) auditory perception of letter sounds and auditory memory (3.) decoding skills, and (4.) visual memory for sequences. Shortcomings in one or more of these subskills can greatly affect a person's spelling ability.

Audiblox is effective in overcoming spelling problems by addressing these underlying shortcomings.
