What Is Materialism?Materialism regards material (matter) as the whole of reality. The universe is seen as a great machine with the course of the world subject to mechanical laws. Everything, even man, functions like parts of a machine. Thereby there is no possibility of free will and acceptance of responsibility. Karl Marx (1818-1883) developed it into a system in which economic prosperity became the most important consideration in life. The classless, collectivist society is a practical example of this conception. Though materialism is almost defunct as a theory or as a practical outlook on life, it is certainly very much alive. ![]() Karl Marx |
